Reading Response for 11/18

Instructional Design Evaluation by Cheryl Calhoun, Shilpa Sahay, & Matthew Wilson (Chapter 14) in McDonald, J. K. & West, R. E. (2021). Design for Learning: Principles, Processes, and Praxis (1st ed.). EdTech Books.

Summary

This Chapter from Instruction Design Evaluation presents multiple models for conducting evaluation and three different phases of evaluation, including formative, summative, and confirmative evaluation. Evaluation should be used to aid in division-making and improve the design process.

One takeaway per reading.

Formative evaluation is used during the design process to provide feedback to inform the process. Summative evaluation is conducted at the end of the design process to evaluate whether the product was successful. Confirmative evaluation is conducted over a long period of time to determine whether the instruction has long-term effects.

Connection to a real-world example

Summative evaluations remind me of using an exit ticket with students at the end of your lesson.
